Getting started

In spring 2020, some articles started coming out about people having unusually strange and vivid quarantine dreams. Meghan had the idea of creating an animated short film about this phenomenon, and we roped in Stevie to help us gather interviews. We were all having weird dreams, too.

Stevie put out a survey on Reddit/Twitter/Facebook asking people to share their wildest quarantine dreams. From there, she and Meghan contacted respondents and found around 20 who were willing to talk over the phone. We also interviewed friends and family, and even ended up including one of our own dreams. (Guess whose! Hehe)

Meanwhile, we did research and made mood boards. Meghan spoke with some dream researchers, and we noted ideas we wanted to explore in our film. In our research, we found some interesting related projects, including this collaborative Google Doc circulated by a poet collecting quarantine dreams. This and this were my personal favorite articles.

They transcribed the interviews, and we organized them by common themes: disease, celebrities, reptiles, exes, etc. From there, it was a long-winded whittling process of choosing the most salient stories, and fitting them within an intelligible emotional arc.
